For your consideration

May 15, 2012 - 2:10pm
The Diocesan Office of Communication subscribes to quite a few newsletters and mailings that cover many topics of general interest to our readers. We pass on these stories and links as they come in. Recently we have subscribed to E, the Environmental Magazine and we are going to be including stories we think are relevant to the life of our congregational communities. This week we have an article titled “Fair Trade Supermarkets” and a link to a review of a new book about churches working to protect the environment. You can find both of them at the links below: http://www.emagazine.com/earth-talk/fair-trade-your-supermarket http://www.emagazine.com/magazine/religious-awakening We are eager to hear your responses to these new additions, so please send us an email at oecnonline@episcopaldioceseoregon.org and share your thoughts.

Reporting in from the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues II

May 8, 2012 - 11:56am
“Monday morning we participated in an ecumenical prayer service at the United Nations Church Center chapel.  The service was organized by Kathryn Rickert of the Diocese of Olympia.  I read a lesson and offered lament patterns on a Peruvian drum. It was an awesome privilege to be seated as an observer in the United Nations General Assembly Room.  There is so much political and cultural memory in that room!  Prayers were offered by a number of indigenous delegations.  Speeches were also made and pro-forma elections for the administration of this year’s Forum then took place. Our Summers Collection event takes place today.  Greg, Bonnie, Cheryle and I have spent a great deal of our time yesterday finding the common spiritual and cultural ground that will make our presentation consistent and powerful. Small aside: I took a spill Sunday evening chasing a cab.  My right shoulder is sprained and the arm doesn’t move well.  Fortunately, I am left handed!” - Father Albert Krueger

Reporting in from the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues

May 7, 2012 - 1:32pm
“Bonnie and I arrived at the Newark Airport  on Saturday afternoon after a very nice flight from Portland.  We traveled by the New Jersey Transit and Port Authority Transit to the World Trade Center where we played the tourist.  Our next challenge was to haul our heavy luggage on the subway to Union Square.  The nearby Lutheran Church-managed “Seafarer’s and International House” had our rooms ready for our four-day stay. We enjoyed a wonderful dinner and discussion at “Mumble’s” with our Manhattan connection, Joy Garland. Joy is a member of St Bartholemew’s on Park Avenue near the United Nations.  She is an active member of “UFER,” a U.N. NGO that promotes fraternity among tribes and peoples.  It is by means of sponsorship by UFER and two other NGO’s that the team from the Diocese of Oregon and the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde is able to attend the 2012 meeting of the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues and make a presentation to this world gathering regarding our collaborative journey to return artifacts from the British Museum. Then we touched base with Greg Archuleta and Chairwoman Cheryle Kennedy of Grand Ronde to make plans for Sunday. The following day we [...]

Opportunity for Developing a Signature Ministry

March 26, 2012 - 10:07am
A Signature Ministry is a servant ministry for which the congregation becomes known in the community.  The Diocese of Oregon, in mutual ministry partnership  with Grace Memorial Church in Portland, is offering a new resource for Episcopal congregations who are interested in establishing a signature ministry. Grace Memorial clergy bring many years of experience to program and project development within the church and the larger community.  They are available to come and meet with a leadership team from the  congregation and guide them through a process of community needs assessment and program design.  Other than reimbursement for any travel expense incurred by Grace clergy, there are no costs to congregations who make use of this new resource. If your church would like to participate in the project or if you desire further information about this resource, please contact the Rev. Stephen Schneider at (503) 287-0418 x 101 or rector@grace-memorial.org.

News from St. John, Bandon

March 20, 2012 - 9:49am
One of St. John’s newest members has been composing new service music.  Forest Munger has composed a Sanctus, Benedictus and Trisagion for the parish that they have been learning and using during Lent and will continue to use throughout the church year.  Forrest moved to Bandon last October from New Jersey.  He is an accomplished musician — a tenor who sang with the choir at St. Thomas (Fifth Avenue) in NYC, and also sang in the chorus of the Metropolitan Opera.  He taught voice in New Jersey for many years, and he continues to teach in the Bandon area.  In addition he is working with the Bandon Community Youth Center giving voice lessons. Forrest, along with our organist Barbara Braddy and violinist Cynthia Leaf, have been helping the congregation learn the new music just prior to the service.   Barbara and Cynthia along with cellist Ruthann Sutton have formed a group called the Trio By The Sea.  Ruthann is a part-time resident of Bandon and joins Barbara and Cynthia on Sunday mornings when in town.  Barbara is developing a concert series of sacred music to begin this summer.  More information on this to follow as the series shapes up
